With Sonic Movie 3 flopping hard at the Japanese box office, the question is more relevant than ever. WHY DID SONIC FAIL IN JAPAN?

Cultural Differences: Sonic was designed for a Western audience, with an edgy, rebellious personality that didn’t fit Japan’s love for cute and humble mascots like Mario and Pikachu.

The SEGA Console Struggles: The Mega Drive flopped in Japan, leaving Sonic without a strong foundation in the market.

Marketing Missteps: SEGA’s decisions, like not releasing Sonic arcade ports and failing to give Sonic a proper Saturn game, kept him from growing in popularity.

Inconsistent Game Quality: Sonic’s reputation in Japan was further hurt by inconsistent game quality, with major failures like Sonic 2006.

Sonic’s Recent Success: Sonic Frontiers became an exception, thanks to its anime-inspired storytelling, VTuber marketing, and collaborations with Japanese icons like ONE OK ROCK.

The theremin is an electronic musical instrument that is played completely without physical contact. It was invented in 1919 by a Russian physicist named Lev Sergeyevich Termen. If you are new to the theremin, please learn about it. The wikipedia page is a good place to begin:

About the helmet:
It was made of papier-mâché with a custom LED visor built in ... post production! using Softimage XSI and Adobe After Effects! Yes, it was a visual effect! 3D modeling, manual rotoscoping, and motion tracking/motion stabilization tricks were employed to pull this off. A LED array with animated text was projected on to a manually rotoscoped 3D visor, that was subsequently composited with the original footage using motion trackers in After Effects. The helmet itself took three days to make. I used 7 layers of card stock/normal stock paper strips in a special heavy mix paste recipe. The shape was built around a custom mold of shipping foam and gaffers tape. It was finished off with gunmetal grey paint. The visor was made of plastic cut from a microwave oven splash cover I found at Target for 5 dollars, laminated on both sides with Limo dark auto window tinting. I could see out, but the translucent plastic from the microwave splash cover along with the heavy tinting made it a little bit difficult. On the inside, the helmet was padded with custom cut felt blocks to fit my head size perfectly. The total weight was around 0.5 Kg (about 1 pound).

I first met Rule in Washington DC a few months back [https://youtu.be/Eod_SNaPRZw]. He was invited by a homeless youth organization to speak to legislators. Rule is actually homeless in Venice, California. After the first interview, we stayed in touch. Since I was visiting Los Angeles, I asked him for an update.

Rule has been homeless since the age of 13. He is now 22. Rule has slept outside, in abandoned buildings, on couches, on trains, on buses, and hotel rooms. He says he has experienced every type of homelessness.

Rule starts off by sharing he is looking for an apartment. Like many people facing the crisis of homelessness, Rule likes to dream big and to focus on the possibilities. There are a few organizations that may be able to help subsidize the cost of a place to stay, but the lack of affordable housing and the unwillingness of landlords to work with nonprofits and homeless people continue to be a roadblock to housing.

Many people commented on Rule's first interview that he just needs to get a job. Please listen to Rule's response when I asked him about this.

On what seemed like a normal afternoon, I was busy chatting in my shop, completely unaware that a little kitten had quietly walked into my world and picked me. When I picked up this friendly little guy, I realized his left eye was covered with a white film; he might have been blind. After learning he was abandoned because of his eye, I knew I had to take him to the vet.
The road to recovery was a rollercoaster. The first check-up confirmed his eye could be treated, but we also found out he had a virus and needed three painful shots. What was even more heart-wrenching was that he later became lethargic with a strangely swollen belly. I was consumed with anxiety, terrified he had the incurable Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). I rushed him to a more specialized hospital and after an agonizing wait, the final diagnosis made me want to laugh and cry at the same time—it was a false alarm. I had simply been overfeeding him out of worry.
With a huge weight off my shoulders, I started caring for him meticulously. I named him "Laifu," hoping to bring him health and good fortune, and I gave him his medicine and eye drops myself every day. At first, I kept him at the shop, worried my dog at home would bully him. As Laifu's health improved and his eyes grew brighter, he turned the entire shop into his personal playground with his playful energy.
Once I was sure he was fully recovered, I finally brought him home. I thought my dog would pick on the new kitten, but what I got instead was a plot twist: the tiny cat now bullies the big dog!

Inspired by the song’s homage to the rave era, the video for Bicep’s GLUE by Joe Wilson is a series of landscapes which revisit the sites once brought alive by now infamous raves. Today they sit desolate and empty, retreating back to their former state, with little to show of their impact they had on UK music culture. The static shots offer space to reflect on the importance and idiosyncrasy of these locations and how an abandoned lido, remote airfield and disused warehouse helped to shape the lives of a generation.

Juxtaposed with the images are the hazy, fragmented recollections of those who were there, lifted from Youtube comment sections of the genre’s most defining sounds. Perhaps the most beautiful and poignant pieces of evidence from the period, they eulogise over a time of unity and euphoria, and are a longing to be returned for just one more night.
