The Dolmabahçe Disaster À:

In 1854, the Ottoman Empire took out its first foreign loan. By 1881, it was no longer a sovereign state. This is the story of the first "Debt Trap" in history.

We explore how the British and French banking systems used compound interest to conquer the Middle East without firing a shot. Discover how Sultan Abdülmecid I bankrupted his nation to build the golden Dolmabahçe Palace, how the "Galata Bankers" ran a state-sponsored Ponzi scheme, and how the "Ottoman Public Debt Administration" (OPDA) seized the empire's revenue.

From the "Decree of Ramadan" default to the final debt payment in 1954, this is the blueprint for how to buy a country.

We are taught that the Ottoman Empire fell because of WWI. The truth is, it was conquered 40 years earlier—not by soldiers, but by Bankers.

In the 19th century, European powers executed one of the most sophisticated "Debt Traps" in history. It began with the Crimean War Loans of 1854, where Britain and France offered "cheap" money to the Sultan to modernize his army and palaces. It was a addiction that would prove fatal.

Lanette is a homeless veteran living in her car in Inglewood. When she got out of the military, Lanette returned to Compton to reconnect with her family. The structure that Lanette learned in the military made it hard for her to adjust to civilian life.

Lanette has PTSD serving in two tours in Iraq. She was a hospital corpsman and believed that Marines couldn't die. Lanette says witnessing the death of Marines does something to a soldier's soul.

She started to smoke Spice to help deal with the PTSD, but eventually, her family asked her to leave because she was using the drug. Her only choice was to live in her car.

Lanette is full of life yet because of PTSD and a drug addiction, she is vulnerable out on the streets. The back window of her car was missing she says as a result of a gang shooting.

Somewhere along the way we failed Lanette. We must be able to provide veterans with the support they need before they end up living in a car or worse.

Angelenos can help end homelessness this March 7th. Vote YES on Measure H to help end homelessness for 45,000 families and individuals across Los Angeles County within the next five years. It will also prevent homelessness for 30,000 families and individuals over the same time period, including women and children, veterans, seniors, foster youth, and survivors of domestic violence.
